The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) has long been, and remains, a world-class research laboratory. Our primary goal is to understand biological processes at the molecular level, through the application of methods drawn from physics, chemistry and genetics.
The unit was founded in 1947 by Max Perutz and moved to its current site in 1962. A stunning new building for the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is being built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. With state-of-the-art facilities it will provide a globally competitive research centre for making the discoveries of the 21st Century.
Over the years, the work of LMB scientists has attracted 9 Nobel Prizes, shared between 13 LMB scientists, as well as numerous other prizes and scientific awards.
Discoveries made at LMB have also formed the basis of many biotechnology companies, including Domantis, Cambridge Antibody Technology, Ribotargets, Protein Design Labs, Celltech, and Biogen.
LMB is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), the UK’s leading publicly funded biomedical research organisation, dedicated to improving human health through excellent science.
