This is a view of the suprachiasmatic nuclei, the brain's body clock "ticking" away under a microscope. The small dots are individual SCN "clock" cells. They are genetically modified so that as the internal clock goes into its "day" they give off light whereas as the cycle moves into "night" they become dim. These remarkable cells can continue to keep their own 24 hour time in a test-tube for weeks even months on end.
