Marla Coetsee

Postdoc

Marla completed her undergraduate degree in Cape Town, South Africa. She then performed a split-site PhD degree, which involved time spent in Cape Town and Edinburgh, Scotland. Next, she moved down to England where she joined Felix’s lab and the exciting world of immunology.

Marla has now moved back to South Africa.

Teresa Thurston

PhD student & Postdoc

I studied genetics for my degree and consider myself a geneticist before an immunologist. Thus I was very excited and lucky to come to this lab and initiate a project on human cell knockouts (which actually do work). After some good genetics, some exciting discoveries about bacterial restriction and lots of fun lab outings, I hope to be submitting my thesis shortly.

Teresa is now a postdoc at Imperial College London.

Annie Kaul

PhD student

I come from the land of colours and spices: India. I studied microbiology and biotechnology in Delhi before coming to Cambridge in 2007. I work on NF-kB signalling and am trying to understand the mysteries of Nemo.  Outside the world of science my interests are stamp collection, travelling, and learning new skills; the latest being Spanish.

Annie has now moved back to India and works as a scientist in biotechnology.

Natalia von Mühlinen

PhD student

I am Argentinean and, as my surname suggests, I have Swiss-German roots. I obtained a degree in Chemistry from Cordoba University, where I worked on gangliosides. For my PhD I am looking at how autophagy defends the cytosol against pathogens. Apart from science, I am interested in travelling, working out and watching sports – football and volleyball being my favourites.  In the future, I will most likely go back to Argentina, where I plan to pursue my fondest dream of working in cancer research. After all, friends, family and world’s best beef are hard to give up!
Natalia is about to move to the US for a postdoc at NIH.

Part iii student

Originally from Germany, I came to Cambridge for my undergraduate degree. For my Part III Biochemistry project (Master's project) I joined the Randow lab in autumn 2012. Currently I’m trying to visualise cytosolic bacteria. Outside of the lab I enjoy ballroom dancing, snowboarding and playing the guitar.
