Regulation of the immune system is fundamental to protecting the host from infection whilst also constraining inappropriate responses that may lead to autoimmunity and undesirable inflammation and immunopathology.
Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) act as critical sentinels for tissue damage and infection. ILC2s play critical roles at the interface of innate and adaptive immunity, and combine with Th2 cells to support tissue repair and protect from parasitic infection. However, they also underlie asthma and allergic responses and may play positive or negative roles in immune reactions to cancer.
We investigate how the ILCs and T cells develop and co-ordinate immune responses through their selective expression of transcription factors, surface receptors (e.g. receptors for neurotransmitters and neuropeptides) and secreted molecules such as cytokines. To interrogate these complex pathways of inflammation and immunity, that involve inter- and intra-cellular signalling cascades, tissue-specific stromal cell microenvironments and interactions with the nervous system, we aim to develop new experimental models and leverage state-of-the-art techniques.
The student will gain skills in immunology, experimental models of disease, development and analysis of novel transgenic models, flow cytometry, single cell analysis – RNAseq, ATACseq, cell and tissue imaging, CRISPR/Cas9 techniques, bioinformatics.
