Judges for ITB 2013

Nachiket Kashikar, Neuroscientist, Laboratory of Molecular Biology

'The overall quality of the artwork presented this year was impressive. All students certainly put in a lot of effort trying to get the thematic message across that appealed to them the most. This was evident from the supporting material that the some of the students presented, wherein they tried to understand the scientific notion behind the topic/s given. I felt that long explanations accompanying the art somewhat defeats the purpose. We would also like to emphasise that quite a few of them were also a bit off topic; nevertheless, those creations stood out as a piece of art. The topic "Teenage Brain" appeared to be very attractive to the students for reasons well understood. However, somewhere the artistic expression seemed to reveal more the social context than "communication of science". We hope that this exercise of participating in "Imagining the Brain" makes students much more interested in science; and neuroscience, in particular and encourages them to pursue their artistic talents. We would like to specially congratulate and thank the young students of Bottisham Village College. The enthusiasm, understanding of the topic, and skill of presenting their work was exceptional. Thank you and all the best to everyone!'

Paul Margiotta, Joint Head of Visual Aids, Laboratory of Molecular Biology

'In a noticeable shift much of the emphasis on creative thinking and visualisation came from Bottisham Village College this year. It was evident in a few of the students from the other colleges that the subjects were treated as more of a software exercise than one of original concept. The clearest concepts and the strongest executions overall came from those that showed no digital content.'
