Title : The Teenage Brain

Category :

AA: “For my piece I have created a print of a person's head where you can see inside of their brain. For the head I merged purple, blue and red paint with ombre into the middle of the brain creating a purple column which links to the brain(which is white). After it had dried, I decided to work into it with black marker pen. I drew spirals in the entire brain and the purple column is outlined with 'branches' coming off to other parts of the head (like a tree). Next, i mounted the head onto blue paper and created a speech bubble filled with spiral- the same as the brain. My piece shows how teenagers express themselves. The brain and the speech bubble share the same pattern to display that our brain dictates what we say, regardless about what we are thinking - sometimes just blurting everything out. The connections part (the purple column) shows that we have a main idea but it isn't reaching our brain and coming across, which is why the branches don't touch the brain- to show that some thoughts drift away or that we can't express them. Overall I am trying to show that the brain is not fully in our control, sometimes we can be too literal whereas other thoughts elude us. As we grow our way of expressing changes, but our thoughts don't. ”

Judges comments: “Interesting thoughts, though open to debate. A strong and simple message and a good piece of art.”
