LB: “For my A level coursework, I have been given the title 'Broken, Torn and Threadbare', and decided to look into how I could illustrate a broken mind. This painting is of a young girl having to go through her adolescence living with a social disorder. I was looking into the artist Jenny Saville and was inspired when I saw her portraits and figures of people pushed up against glass. I felt that the glass in her paintings depicts a mental health disorder very well as we don't see the glass, only the marks left on the figure. It also illustrates a physical barrier put up by her own mind by her disorder which separates her from the rest of society leaving her feeling isolated and alone. ”

Judges comments: “A very high level of artistic skill with good references to other artists and an excellent accompanying description.
A very strong message, with outstanding technical skill, well conceived and executed.
A powerful depiction of the isolation perceived to be experienced by so many teenagers.”
