Title : The Teenage Brain

Category :

Highly Commended

HF: “In my piece on the teenage brain I have split the page into 3 sections, the left side, right side and frontal lobe. I did this to show how different sections of the brain work. The left side of the brain is used for logic, whilst the right side is more social and creative. The frontal lobe is used for emotions, problem solving and consciousness. At this stage the brain goes under a lot of development as this is the time when people change the most and are emotional. I wanted to show all aspects of the brain from intelligence, to being self conscious, to love and emotions. In the middle I put a girl in a bubble. Everyone likes being in their own space as it is where they can be their self, but everyone has two sides to them and that comes out more at this age. I thought a comic strip layout would be best to show the differences between the development stages and the different parts of the brain. All together it shows the different stages and how the brain grows to change. The teenage brain isn't the easiest thing to understand as each brain belongs to someone who is completely unique, so development could be different to every teenager, but this could give an insight to the teenage brain itself.”

Judges comments: “I loved this piece. It was humorous, insightful and communicated the science in a balanced way in a style accessible to teenagers.
Very nice caricature of the teenage brain.”
