Judges for ITB 2014
Mathias Pasche, Imaging Specialist Laboratory of Molecular Biology
'The outcome of the 2014 Imagining the brain contest showed artwork of a very high standard. Participants of Netherhall & Bottisham produced some remarkable pieces which encouraged the viewer to go back home and find out more about the brain's function, more specifically its dysfunctional states. This is exactly the aim of this competition: To encourage thinking - on both sides. The artists had to find ways on how to convey a problem, such as this years topics: Neurotechnology, The Teenage Brain, Memory and Food for Thought. And they succeeded in a very convincing way. The viewers - a mixture of local LMB scientists, but also non-scientific personal and external visitors - stated that the pieces throughout started to spark off curiosity and the desire to gather more background information regarding the scientific/brain-related problems displayed in the 2014 show. Excellent artwork!'

'Imagining the Brain is a fantastic concept! Talking about complex scientific ideas to young people and inspiring them to communicate these ideas as art allows a novel exchange of ideas to take place. I was very impressed with the standard of the work produced by the artists from all ages and at all stages of their training. It was clear that they had researched the topics and thought deeply about them and the exhibition entries showed a great deal of creativity and, in many cases, a highly personal response to ideas that were thought-provoking.
I am delighted that such a leading laboratory has set up this initiative, providing a unique opportunity for young artists to engage with science.'
