EM: “My piece is about the puzzling challenge of the brain. Of how we don’t actually know how it works. Due to this I painted a Rubik Cube, as it represents the challenge of understanding the brain and the challenge the brain has to go through to run our lives. I interpreted the brain design as an interior design and what it stands for. As the brain doesn’t look great, it just looks average and real one looks disgusting. But the image of a puzzle (Rubik Cube) is nice and gives off a great thought about the brain. I chose to use paint in my piece because I thought it would work best with the Rubik Cube, as I needed solid colour and I needed a range of colours, which are similar. So I also used paint to join colours by mixing them. I also called it clandestine as the brain is secret and undercover, as most of it is a mystery.”
Judges comments: “Striking bold representation of ongoing scientific discovery. The use of the Rubik cube is a wonderful metaphor for how much we still don’t know about the brain.”
