Gaucher disease may offer Ashkenazi Jews protection against TB

Lalita Ramakrishnan’s group, in the LMB’s Cell Biology Division and the University of Cambridge’s Molecular Immunity Unit (housed at the LMB) have discovered that the biological mechanisms which underpin Gaucher disease – a rare genetic disease which is most commonly found amongst Ashkenazi Jews – are also effective at clearing tuberculosis infection.
