On day 264 of #LMB365 is an image of the structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit. This structure was first published #OTD in 2000 in a landmark paper in Nature by Venki Ramakrishnan and colleagues. The 30S ribosomal subunit has a crucial role in decoding mRNA by monitoring base pairing between the codon on mRNA and the anticodon on transfer RNA. Venki shared the 2009 @Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on determining the ribosome structure.
