Earlier this year, the LMB was pleased to appoint Csilla Biro as the new Manager of Domestic Services. In this role, she oversees and coordinates the team’s exemplary provision of cleaning and waste disposal services.
Csilla brings over a decade of experience in domestic services, having worked in a variety of locations, beginning as a cleaner and then progressing to supervisor, assistant manager and now Head of Facilities. Her journey began when she moved to the UK and took on her first role in cleaning, giving her a deep understanding of the standards and expectations required to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
In her new role, Csilla oversees the domestic services teams, manages cleaning rotas, liaises with suppliers and contractors and ensures the smooth running of waste management and segregation. The main LMB building spans approximately 27,000 m2, produces ~170 tonnes of waste annually and accommodates hundreds of staff each day, so the scale of operations Csilla manages is considerable.
Her team is also responsible for managing hazardous waste, with trained technicians handling everything from chemical and radiation waste to autoclave operations and lab coat laundering. “We’ve improved the lab coat turnaround from two weeks to just 24–48 hours,” she notes.
Csilla is passionate about sustainability and is working closely with colleagues to reduce landfill waste and improve recycling across the LMB. She has already set up a new stream for re-use of ice packs and is actively exploring dedicated recycling streams for waste items including x-ray films, fly vials and spray bottles to help make the LMB greener. This will add to the existing recycling schemes in place for items such as coffee pods and ink cartridges. Csilla has also introduced a chemical-free cleaning product, which will greatly reduce the LMB’s impact on the environment.
Visitors to the LMB often comment on how new the building looks, despite being over ten years old. Csilla credits this to the pride her team takes in their work. “Our cleaners maintain a high standard; you can always see the care they put in.”
Reflecting on the LMB’s culture, Csilla describes it as “respectful and peaceful.” She values the diversity of her team and the supportive environment. “It’s the most welcoming place I’ve ever worked. Everyone helps each other and treats each other fairly.”
