Max Perutz honoured on Royal Mail stamp

The founder of the LMB, Max Perutz, has been honoured on a Royal Mail stamp, as part of their ‘Remarkable Lives’ series.  Max is one of 10 distinguished people honoured in the series, which commemorates significant people on the centenary of their birth.  The stamps feature monochrome portraits of the subjects; the image of Max shows him with a diffractometer, in a photograph taken by Cambridge Newspapers in 1980.
Max Perutz was born in Vienna on 19 May 1914.

2014 John Kendrew Lecture to be given by Michael Levitt

Michael Levitt will give the Kendrew Lecture 2014 on Tuesday 25th March at 16.15pm in the LMB’s Max Perutz Lecture Theatre.
The title of the lecture is ‘Birth & future of multi-scale modelling of macromolecules’.  This event is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.
Michael pioneered computational biology, setting up the conceptual and theoretical framework for a field that he is still involved in.

Rebecca Tomkins wins 2014 Apprenticeship Award for Administration

Rebecca Tomkins, from the LMB’s Human Resources (HR) Department, Operations Group has been announced as the 2014 winner of the Apprenticeship Award for Administration from The College of West Anglia. Rebecca received her certificate at the annual Apprentice Awards Ceremony held recently.
The College of West Anglia works with employers across Cambridgeshire to support students through apprenticeships whilst offering individuals the chance to develop knowledge and skills in the workplace.

David Willetts makes a return visit to the LMB

The Rt Hon David Willetts, MP, Minister for Universities and Science, made a return visit to the new LMB building, accompanied by the Rt Hon Andrew Lansley, CBE, MP for South Cambridgeshire and Leader of the House of Commons, and Vicky Ford, MEP for the East of England on Friday 7th March.

Madan Babu awarded the Protein Society’s 2014 Protein Science Young Investigator Award

Madan Babu, from the LMB’s Structural Studies Division, has been announced as the recipient of the Protein Society’s 2014 Protein Science Young Investigator Award.
The Protein Science Young Investigator Award recognises important contributions to the study of proteins, by a scientist in the early stages of an independent career. It is named after The Protein Society’s academic journal, Protein Science. Madan is the first LMB scientist to be honoured with this prestigious award.

LMB raises over £1,700 for the Addenbrooke’s Dialysis Centre

Staff at the LMB have raised over £1,700 from their annual Charity fundraiser for the Addenbrooke’s Dialysis Centre in memory of former colleague Michael Neuberger, who passed away in late 2013. This cause was chosen by Michael’s wife Gill in appreciation of the care and support Michael received at the Centre, where he spent many hours over several months during 2013.
