Alessio Vagnoni awarded David Sainsbury Fellowship for work on neuronal ageing in a non-mammalian model

Alessio Vagnoni

Alessio Vagnoni, a post-doc in Simon Bullock’s group in the LMB’s Cell Biology Division has been awarded the NC3Rs David Sainsbury Fellowship 2015-2018. The David Sainsbury Fellowship was introduced in 2012 to support talented early career scientists engaged in 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement) research and Alessio is the tenth Fellow to be appointed.

Madeline Lancaster wins the 2015 3Rs Prize for 3D tissue models

Madeline Lancaster from the LMB’s Cell Biology Division has been announced as the joint winner of this year’s 3Rs Prize competition, run by the NC3Rs, and sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). This Prize is awarded to an original research paper published within the last three years that has outstanding scientific or technological potential to replace, reduce or refine the use of animals in research.

2016 Francis Crick Lecture to be given by Adrian Bird

Adrian Bird will give the 2016 Francis Crick Lecture on Tuesday 16th February 2016 at 11.30am in the Max Perutz Lecture Theatre at the LMB. The lecture, entitled “DNA Sequence and the Epigenome Entwined” is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.
Adrian is Buchanan Professor of Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. His group’s research focuses on the basic biology and biomedical significance of DNA methylation.

LMB raises over £1300 for Cancer Research UK

LMB give cheque to Cancer research UK

The LMB’s annual charity Christmas raffle took place in December 2015. Staff at the LMB raised a total of £1372.85 for Cancer Research UK. This year’s charity was chosen in memory of their late colleague, Neil Marshall, who sadly lost his fight with cancer earlier in 2015.

LMB receive highly commended prize at Understanding Animal Research Openness Awards

UAR openness award

Representatives from across the UK life science community joined Understanding Animal Research at the Wellcome Collection in London recently to celebrate the 79th Paget Lecture and the second annual Openness Awards. At the event, the LMB Biological Services Group received the highly commended prize for its Named Persons posters that demonstrate the responsibilities and work areas of all named roles working with animals within a facility, clearly connecting a face to a job title.

2015 César Milstein Lecture to be given by Lewis Cantley

Dr Lewis Cantley will give the 2015 Milstein Lecture on Monday 14th December 2015 at 4.15pm in the LMB’s Max Perutz Lecture Theatre. The lecture, entitled “Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase and Cancer Metabolism” is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.
Lewis is currently Director at the Meyer Cancer Center, Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York.
