Lori Passmore receives EMBO Young Investigator Programme Award

MRC: Martin PhelpsLMB group leader, Lori Passmore, has been elected into the 2014 EMBO Young Investigator Programme. This prestigious programme recognises some of Europe’s best young scientists and provides academic, practical and financial support to help them realise their potential as world-class researchers.
This year 27 Young Investigators have been elected. Lori joins a vibrant and broad network of over 340 Young Investigators from all over Europe.

Awards for “Imagining the Brain” art winners

Winning students in the LMB’s “Imagining the Brain” competition recently attended an awards ceremony at an exhibition of their work at the LMB. The art-science competition is an LMB outreach project for Cambridgeshire students that aims to inspire young artists to think about and communicate science, and this year nearly 70 entries were received.
The artists had a choice of four topics to research and illustrate: the teenage brain, neurotechnology, food for thought and memory.

LMB finalist in BIFM Awards 2014

Representatives from the LMB attended a glittering ceremony, hosted by comic and actor Hugh Dennis, at The Grosvenor House Hotel on 13 October, as nominees for a British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) award. The BIFM is the professional body for facilities management. Founded in 1993, they promote excellence in facilities management for the benefit of practitioners, the economy and society.

Science Image Award winners announced

The winners of an LMB competition designed to inspire young children about the microscopic world have been announced. The project aims to give children new insights into the natural world and to help spark a long-lasting interest in science.
The Science Image Award scheme, which is part of the LMB’s Microscopes4Schools outreach initiative, lent a digital microscope to local primary schools so that the children could capture images of specimens they found at home or in the school grounds.

2014 Francis Crick Lecture to be given by Stephen J. Elledge

Stephen J. Elledge, Gregor Mendel Professor of Genetics, Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School will give the 2014 Francis Crick Lecture on Friday 19th September at 4.15pm in the LMB’s Max Perutz Lecture Theatre.  The lecture is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.
Stephen completed his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  His postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University saw him begin to focus on the cell cycle.

LMB wins Safe, Successful and Sustainable S-Lab Award 2014

The new LMB building has been announced as joint winner of the 2014 S-Lab award for new research laboratories worldwide.  The award was presented at a gala ceremony in London on September 1st, and was accepted by the LMB Director Hugh Pelham and Steve Holmes who was involved in the construction project.
