Greg Winter, former Deputy Director of the LMB, has been jointly awarded the Spanish “Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research 2012.” Greg shares the prize with Dr Richard Lerner of the Scripps Research Institute for their contributions to the field of immunology and, in particular, their work on therapeutic antibodies.
In the 1970s César Milstein and Georges Köhler of the LMB discovered how to make rodent monoclonal antibodies.

LMB celebrates 50 years of ground-breaking research
On 28 May 1962, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen.
The 22,000 sq ft (2,044 sq m) purpose built science laboratory was built next to, and opened at the same time as, the new Addenbrooke’s Hospital – so beginning the development of a major site for first-class medical research, teaching and health care.
Sarah Teichmann elected to EMBO membership
Sarah Teichmann, from the LMB’s Structural Studies Division, has been named in the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) list of new members announced on 9 May 2012.
EMBO elects new members annually on the basis of scientific excellence and for outstanding research contributions. Sarah is one of 55 eminent life scientists selected for membership in 2012.
EMBO Membership is a life-long honour and Sarah joins a membership of 1,550 of the world’s foremost molecular biologists.
2012 César Milstein Lecture to be given by Bruce Beutler
Professor Bruce Beutler will give the 2012 Milstein Lecture on Thursday 17 May 2012 at 4.15pm in the LMB’s Max Perutz Lecture Theatre. The lecture, entitled “How do we sense microbes? From LPS to TNF and the TLRs”, is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.
Bruce is currently Regental Professor and Director of the Center for Genetics of Host Defense at University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center.
Jason Chin nominated for European Inventor Award
Jason Chin, from the LMB’s Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry division, has been nominated for the European Inventor Award (EIA) – presented annually by the European Patent Office (EPO) to outstanding inventors for their contribution to technological, social and economic progress.
The winners of the 2012 EIA will be announced during an award ceremony in Copenhagen on 14 June.
New Science Image Award for primary schools
A new Science Image Award for primary schools – to inspire children to learn about cell biology and microscopy – has been officially launched by the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB).
Teachers wanting to take part in the competition will find it an easy, free way to inspire primary school children (aged 8+) about science.
The competition is open to schools from across Cambridgeshire.
