Nobel Laureate, Sir Aaron Klug, donates his archives to Churchill Archives Centre.

One of the pioneers of structural molecular biology, Sir Aaron Klug, former Director of the LMB, has given his extensive archive to the Churchill Archives Centre, Cambridge.
There it will join the archives of fellow LMB scientists and Nobel Laureates, Max Perutz and César Milstein, and the notebooks of his former colleague, Rosalind Franklin.
Aaron’s archive spans the whole of his life and career.

LMB hosts Feldberg Prize Lecture by Roland Lill.

Professor Roland Lill from the Institute of Cytobiology, Philipps University Marburg, Germany, will deliver the Feldberg Prize Lecture on Friday April 15th at 4.15pm in the LMB’s Max Perutz Lecture Theatre. The lecture is open to anyone locally who is interested in attending.
Roland graduated from the Universities of Ulm and Munich and then earned his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Munich in 1986.

2011 César Milstein Lecture to be given by Tom Rapoport.

Professor Tom Rapoport from the Department of Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School will give the inaugural Milstein Lecture on Thursday April 7th 2011 at 4.15 pm in the LMB’s Max Perutz Lecture Theatre. The lecture is open to anyone in the local area who is interested in attending.
Tom graduated with honours and then earned his PhD from Humboldt University in 1972.

Peter Lawrence: lifetime achievement award.

Peter Lawrence, an Emeritus member of the LMB, has been honoured with the 2011 Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) Lifetime Achievement Award.
The SDB gives its Lifetime Achievement Award annually to a senior developmental biologist in recognition of their outstanding and lasting contributions in the field. The award is given for the individual’s excellence in research and for being a superb mentor who has helped train the next generation of exceptional scientists.

LMB at the Cambridge Science Festival: 19th March.

On Saturday 19th March 2011, as part of the annual Cambridge Science Festival, LMB scientists are involved in events across Cambridge aimed at promoting science to the general public.
Crystal Clear Exhibit
Crystal Clear is an exhibit run by the LMB’s Samantha Wynne and Harry Powell, showing various types and sizes of crystalline materials, from large potash alum and salt crystals down to tiny protein crystals viewed through microscopes.

Human antibody approved for treatment of lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic, life-threatening inflammatory autoimmune disease that can cause debilitating fatigue, painful and swollen joints, fever, skin rash, and kidney problems. The disease can also lead to arthritis, kidney failure, heart and lung inflammation, central nervous system abnormalities, inflammation of the blood vessels, and blood disorders. Approximately five million people worldwide suffer from various forms of lupus, the majority of whom are women.
